CBD captured the attention of science boffins around the world when it was first discovered way back in 1940’s. But it was only since the 90’s, when we really started to appreciate the benefits of CBD, kicking-off this explosion of interest in this amazing multi-use plant-based component.
Today, when people hear about all the benefits of CBD, it is almost too hard to believe, and you won’t be alone in that thought. How does a natural compound found in the humble Hemp plant do so much, whilst still being safe? ‘Rubbish’ I hear you cry!
Sadly, whilst many claims are made about the benefits, little science-based evidence exists. As such, most cannabinoids (the scientific term used to describe natural compounds found almost exclusively in hemp plants, in other words the ‘exciting’ bits) are currently being studied further to establish proven evidence, for better words to confirm “it’s does exactly what it says on the tin!”
Under the Bonnet | How does CBD actually work?
Anecdotally, CBD has been touted as a cure ALL product!, which based on current understanding it is not. What we can do is recognise CBD’s method of action i.e. how it works within our body and with that knowledge we can then start to understand how CBD could form part of a healthy lifestyle.
Now the science bit….
It has been clearly demonstrated that CBD’s method of action in the body is through an indirect effect on the body’s signalling network known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Since its discovery in 1992, the ECS has been shown to regulate key functions in almost every part of human anatomy including memory, mood, appetite, sleep and the immune system to name a few.
So, that’s why, when properly maintained, this same signalling system can contribute to you feeling better, more alive and better rested. Just think of it as your keep-safe guardian-angel that has evolved over millions of years – comforting I know.
Strangely, most medical professionals aren’t fully aware of the existence of Endocannabinoid system, which researchers now believe is the largest neurotransmitter in the human body. Now we do know that this system is active in everyone, all the time, from even before we are born, until the end of our lives – impressive!
CBD, an incredible plant-based compound, could be just one of many cannabinoids that may play a vital part in the upkeep and maintenance of our body’s regulatory system. Other cannabinoids like CBG are yet to establish their place so well in a similar role.
“I want CBD in my life but how?”
Ingestible CBD, when taken responsibly and within the guidelines can contribute to a wide range of health benefits like improved mood, better quality sleep, ‘laser sharp’ focus even under our normal day-to-day stresses & strains. We all know our triggers, well I definitely know mine!
Also, CBD is becoming more and more popular in cosmetic products, with its potent antioxidant and skin conditioning properties to being recognised as a safe ingredient, it’s no wonder why so many of us are turning to this alternative by exploring a world of CBD in skin and beauty products.
A Friendly Word of Warning….
Over half a million people in the UK regularly take CBD in some form but sadly not all products are made equal. This throws-up a range of questions like “Am I feeling the benefits from this CBD product?” or “How do I know this product is safe to use?”... and so the list goes on. That is why it is so important to buy from a brand who answers this and all your other questions.
There is still an abundance of poor-quality products being sold in our UK shops today and at eye-watering prices with many still over promising on the benefits, without that scientific evidence.
Keep safe & stay well
